New to Eclipse technology

1. What is Eclipse technology?
2. Getting started with emerging Eclipse technologies

alphaWorks provides a variety of emerging Eclipse technologies to get you started in building your own frameworks, applications, and reusable assets that focus on and promote open standards. In addition, there are demos, discussion forums, and resources that enable you to interact with creators of the technology and the broader user community. The Eclipse technologies on alphaWorks are frequently built on, or can be integrated with, ongoing projects on Eclipse.org.

1. What is Eclipse technology?

Eclipse is an open-source, Java-based, extensible development platform. It is a framework and a set of services for building a development environment from plug-in components. Eclipse includes a standard set of plug-ins, including the Java Development Tools (JDT) and the Plug-in Development Environment (PDE), that enable developers to extend Eclipse and build tools that can be integrated seamlessly with the Eclipse environment.

2. Getting started with emerging Eclipse technologies

alphaWorks provides technologies that focus on a variety of Eclipse topics, from the Eclipse Web Tools Platform Project to Eclipse Modeling Framework. Eclipse technology is pervasive throughout downloads available on alphaWorks, as well as in IBM products.

Eclipse technologies are offering in the following categories:

  • Application management - Tools for developing and managing applications.
  • Modeling - Modeling tools including UML and Eclipse Modeling Framework.
  • Web services - Tools that allow applications to communicate with each other in a platform- and programming language-independent manner.
  • Editors - Creating, editing and optimization tools.
  • Database - A variety of plug-ins for building and communication with databases.
  • Testing - Tools for testing, debugging and quality assurance.
  • Utilities - A collection of Eclipse plug-ins creating applications.

Get started with the following Eclipse-based technologies:
Unstructured Information Management Architecture SDK, a Java SDK that supports the implementation, composition, and deployment of applications working with unstructured information.
Model Transformation Framework, a set of tools that helps developers implement transformations between Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) models.
Multimodal Tools Plus, a package including voice-enabled Multimodal Browsers and the Multimodal Toolkit, which is an Eclipse-based tool designed to speed development of browser-based applications on embedded devices that require both visual and voice interaction.
IBM Web Tools for Eclipse, the initial IBM contribution to the Eclipse Web Tools Platform project, with tools for data access, server control, XML authoring, and Web application creation, including Web services.

Browse through the Eclipse technologies or search for an Eclipse topic to find a technology of interest to you. You can also join the discussion about any alphaWorks technology in order to learn more. And let us know what you think; your feedback is important to us is shaping the alphaWorks site and what we bring you.
