New to Emerging Technologies Toolkit

1. What is the difference between an alphaWorks technology that is a member of the ETTK family and one that is not?
2. What is the difference between the this IBM Emerging Technologies Toolkit Portal and what was previously available in the IBM Emerging Technologies Toolkit which has been renamed ETTK for Web Services and Autonomic Computing?
3. Are ETTK technologies going to become IBM products?

The Emerging Technologies Toolkit (ETTK) is a collection of technologies from IBM's software development and research labs that have special relevance to IBM’s emerging software strategy. An ETTK technology indicates that IBM has attached importance to the emerging technology area, and is dedicated to giving it appropriate incubation and exposure. These technologies are bundled to help technologists learn about a subject area by providing tools, example code, documentation and executable demos that illustrate IBM's current approach on these topics.

1. What is the difference between an alphaWorks technology that is a member of the ETTK family and one that is not?

All alphaWorks technologies showcase technologies currently being developed within IBM. AlphaWorks technologies cover a wide range of technical areas from Lotus Notes additions, to Java enhancments, to DB2 plug-ins. The IBM Emerging Technologies Toolkit (ETTK) packages are focused on just a few select technology areas. Being a part of the ETTK family of technologies means that IBM has attached importance to this emerging area, is dedicated to giving it the appropriate incubation and thinks that it is something worth watching. In a way, you could associate "ETTK" labeled technologies as being close to "alphaWorks Featured Technologies".

ETTK technologies explore new types of applications or address emerging application, internet or standard-oriented domains. So ETTK technologies don't cover ideas that are replacements for existing solutions, rather we are focused on creating technologies that foster business innovation. We are building an on-line community focused on these ETTK technologies so we can get multi-way communication to foster innovative ideas built around these technologies. We value your input and want to hear how you would make use of a particular ETTK technology in your environment.

2. What is the difference between the this IBM Emerging Technologies Toolkit Portal and what was previously available in the IBM Emerging Technologies Toolkit which has been renamed ETTK for Web Services and Autonomic Computing?

ETTK is a collection of technologies from IBM's software development and research labs that have special relevance to IBM’s emerging software strategy. Instead of just one consolidated download ETTK package, "ETTK" is now a family of individual technologies focused strategic technologies. This expansion of the ETTK name to encompass a family of technologies is intended to broaden the scope of technologies in which to highlight. The package formally known as the ETTK still exists but has been renamed to ETTK for Web Services and Autonomic Computing to better reflect its contents. There are now other ETTK packages available such as Laszlo based technologies.

3. Are ETTK technologies going to become IBM products?

No. The ETTK family of technologies are previews of emerging technologies which are distributed on IBM's alphaWorks web site. However, some of the ETTK packages or selected components developed within the package might be shipped within existing IBM products depending on the acceptance of the technology. ETTK packages could be viewed as a "proving ground" for emerging technologies. There is a possibility that some of the new technologies introduced within an ETTK package would have to be changed to keep in line with the ever evolving standards and specifications. ETTK packages are not licensed for running production applications or licensed to be redistributed.
