What is Command Line Bot?

The Command Line Bot is a tool that enables access to distrbuted UNIX® systems and services from a simple messenger. The unified log-in works for UNIX systems and applications running on them that also need authentication; these include databases, storage managers, and other enterprise software. The log-in is done through a simple messenger client (such as IBM Sametime or Yahoo/MSN Messenger.) The ubiquity of the messenger and easy access from wireless devices are added advantages.

This idea can be further extended to make a collaboration environment for UNIX users. For example, it's possible to add people to a one-on-one conversation and make it a conference. In a similar sense, it is possible to work on a UNIX system and invite other people to work on it. This technology also provides an extensible JavaTM library for easily creating and deploying different kinds of bots. One could take this base concept to the next level by including an interface with HTTP, wherein it would be possible to access HTTP services/resources (such as a Web-page) from a messenger client. Further on, other interfaces could be added to existing useful protocol layers such as FTP, SNMP, or any other layer; these interfaces would be useful in gaining access from a simple messenger client. Another very useful interface would be with an online Webcast server.

How does it work?

This release works with IBM Sametime messaging service and includes automatic log-in and UNIX command line access or automatic log-in into any other command line interface that runs on UNIX and can be accessed from the UNIX command line. Future releases would include interfacing with the HTTP protocol for accessing Web resources from the Sametime client.
