What is DRE?
Document Rendering Engine (DRE) is a collection of Java classes that can be used to define an abstract document and render it in PDF or HTML. A document consists of a collection of elements such as text, lists (bulleted, numbered, plain), tables, images, fonts, color, etc.
How does it work?
Currently, the supported rendering formats are PDF and HTML. DRE was originally developed with PDF in mind, so many of the concepts and terms have a PDF slant; theoretically, however, DRE is output -neutral. DRE is a 100% pure Java application.

| | About the technology author(s): Craig Edwards is an IT Architect in the Buy and Supply practice at the IBM Innovation Centre in Sydney. For the past three to four years, he has been active in the design and development of B2C e-business solutions with particular focus on Java, WebSphere, DB2, and MQSeries. Before that, he worked in the Rapid Application Development group for several years developing end-to-end prototypes and proof-of-concepts for technologies.
DRE was developed in his spare time as an intellectual exercise. The dynamic PDF generation was used in several projects, so DRE has grown into its current format.
