What is Application Tools for Extension Services?

Application Tools for Extension Services has graduated.

This technology is now available as a "feature update" that can be installed in WebSphere Studio Site Developer or WebSphere Studio Application Developer, Version 5.1 or 5.1.1. Please follow the installation instructions below.

  1. Install either WebSphere Studio Site Developer (WSSD) or WebSphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD) 5.1 or 5.1.1.
  2. Install WebSphere Studio Device Developer (WSDD) 5.6 as an extension to WSSD or WSAD.
  3. From WSDD's Install/Update perspective, install the SMF Bundle Development Kit 5.6 as follows:
    1. In the Feature Updates view, expand Sites to Visit --> WebSphere Runtimes --> Technologies.
    2. Select SMF Bundle Development Kit 5.6, and follow the instructions.
  4. From WSSD or WSAD's Install/Update perspective, install Application Tools for Extension Services 5.6 as follows:
    1. In the Feature Updates view, expand Sites to Visit --> WebSphere Runtimes --> Technologies.
    2. Select Application Tools for Extension Services 5.6, and follow the instructions.

About the technology author(s)

David Klein works for the IBM Pervasive Computing division in Austin, TX, where he has been involved in the development of the Extension Services platform. He has worked for IBM since 1983, with a career spanning the areas of language development, robotics, embedded systems, device drivers, and, most recently, pervasive computing.

Roy Paterson has been working in the IBM Pervasive Computing division in Austin, TX, for two years. He has completed two tours in IBM's Extreme Blue program, and he has worked on numerous projects in the pervasive computing area. Mr. Paterson's interests include accelerating the advancement and widespread use of pervasive technologies; he is currently working on several tools to speed up developer adoption of these technologies.

Kristin Firth joined IBM during the summer of 2002 as part of their Extreme Blue program in Raleigh, North Carolina. After completion of the program, she moved to Austin, TX, to take part in the first Extreme Blue program for all seasons. Ms. Firth then moved into the Pervasive Computing division, where she is currently part of the Device-Led Solutions team.
