1. Who can access the mashups and feeds that I build?

If you publicly host IBM® Mashup Starter Kit, then anyone can access your mashups and feeds. You can also require users to log in and use group and user permissions to restrict access to your assets within the applications. If you deploy IBM Mashup Starter Kit within your enterprise (or office network) and your office network is appropriately secured, then only your organizations users will be able to access your mashups and feeds.

2. Can my local version of IBM Mashup Starter Kit interoperate with the QEDWiki and MashupHub alphaWorks® services?

Yes. We've designed the alphaWorks service instances to be the hub of our community. You'll find that when you launch the QEDExplorer (using Explore > QEDExplorer), the repository dropdown selection (Explore…) already has the alphaWorks MashupHub added.

If you create a widget that you would like to share, simply select the widget in your local repository; there you can see the remote publishing options (displayed at the bottom) for publishing it to the alphaWorks MashupHub widget catalog. Publishing it allows other users to import and use it.

3. From what enterprise data sources can Mashup Hub create feeds?

IBM Mashup Hub can generate Atom feeds from Microsoft® Access exported queries, CSV files (Excel worksheets are forthcoming), relational databases, XML documents, IBM Information Server, IBM DB2® pureXML™, Web services, and IMS (Information Management System) databases and transactions.

4. What widget types does the Mashup Hub catalog support?

Any widget type can be uploaded and downloaded, but at this time, only QEDWiki widgets can be discovered via its programmatic search API.

5. How is Mashup Hub's feed mashup capability different than Yahoo Pipes?

A Mashup Hub feed mashup can be based on joins between feeds, and it has a special ability to process XML content in feeds, which is what you typically have when the feed is from an enterprise data source.

6. Does Mashup Hub require QEDWiki?

No. They are packaged together and QEDWiki can explore feeds and widgets in the Mashup Hub catalog, but Mashup Hub is not dependent on QEDWiki.

8. Does Mashup Hub support IMS (Information Management System)?

Yes; it allows a user to create feeds from IMS data and transactions. Further information about the IMS plug-in for Mashup Hub and the latest update is available at the following Web site: IMS and Web 2.0.

9. Does Mashup Hub come with examples?

Yes. From the main Mashup Hub screen, on the lefthand frame, select Get Started. The Get Started page has many examples that include step-by-step instructions for creating feeds and mashup feeds. Also available for download is a slightly more complex and detailed example; this example explains how to use the Mashup Hub editor to create two feed mashups using some of the mathematical and string functions available in the editor. Included are complete instructions for creating these two mashups using an existing feed in the Mashup Hub catalog.

10. Does QEDWiki support HTTP proxy servers?

Yes; a separately downloadable patch is now available that enables proxy server support for QEDWiki. Instructions for installing the patch are as follows:
  1. Download the patch zip file and save it to disk.
  2. Launch QEDWiki in your browser and log in as WikiAdmin.
  3. Click on Workspace and Import Workspace.
  4. Click on Browse (next to Import File).
  5. Navigate to the ProxyPatch_01_11_2008.zip file on your disk and click on Open.
  6. Click on the Import button at the bottom of the page. This action completes the addition of the patch files to QEDWiki.
  7. You must now add some information to your QEDWiki settings in your wiki.config.ini: On your file system, open ibmmsk\qed\wiki_web_app\wiki.config.ini in a text editor and append the following information to the bottom of the file (modifying it with your specifix proxy information, where appropriate). Note: Proxy.bypass is a list of domains you do not wish QEDWiki to attempt to access through the proxy server. Do not remove localhost or 127.0.0.1 from the list.
    • proxy.bypass = localhost, 127.0.0.1
    • proxy.host = the name of your proxy server
    • proxy.port = 8080
    • proxy.user = user name
    • proxy.pass = password
