Update: October 9, 2007

Try the new downloadable version of IBM® Mashup Starter Kit, which integrates Mashup Hub, IBM DAMIA, and QEDWiki.

What is IBM Mashup Hub?

IBM® Mashup Hub connects Web 2.0 mashup creators and situational application assemblers with the data and user interface components they need for creating their solutions. Mashup Hub provides two broad areas of support: feed generation for enterprise data sources and a catalog of feeds and user interface (UI) widgets.

How does it work?

Users can perform the following actions:
  • Define which data from an enterprise data source, such as a relational database, should be included in an Atom feed.
  • Register existing feeds so they can be shared.
  • Upload or download UI widgets, including those used by QEDWiki to make enterprise mashups.
  • Participate in community interactions with other Mashup Hub users. These interactions include social tagging, commenting, rating, and searching the content of the Mashup Hub catalog.

Feed sources supported by this release of Mashup Hub include relational databases, collections of XML documents in IBM DB2® pureXML™, Microsoft® Excel files, comma-separated value files, Microsoft Access exported queries, IBM Information Server federated data, and the contents of ordinary XML documents. A user can also register existing feeds in the Mashup Hub catalog.

Firefox extension

Firefox users can download a handy extension to make it even easier to add feeds to the Mashup Hub.

Installation instructions:

  1. Open mashuphub_1.2_aws.xpi with Firefox.
  2. Click on Install and restart Firefox.
  3. After Firefox restarts, you might see the Mashup Hub gear image on your toolbar. If you do not see the image, follow these steps:
    1. Right-click on your toolbar and choose Customize.
    2. Look through the list of icons and find the gear labeled MashupHub Feed Grabber. Drag and drop this icon anywhere on your toolbar.
You are now ready to use the extension.

Using the extension:

  1. When you have a feed that you want to catalog, click on the Mashup Hub gear icon in your toolbar.
  2. Go to the alphaWorks Services page and log in (you will probably be prompted to do so).
  3. Click on the Mashup Hub gear icon on your toolbar.
  4. A form will appear. Save the title, URL, description, and tags for your feed.
  5. Click on Catalog. The window will close and your feed will be registered in Mashup Hub.
