What is Metadata Migration Tool for DB2 Content Manager?

The IBM Metadata Migration Tool for DB2 Content Manager facilitates reversible data migration between data structure definitions in a DB2 Content Manager (CM) system and their XML files. The tool is particularly useful when migrating data from one DB2 Content Manager product to another. It allows one to easily export the data structure definitions from the source DB2 Content Manager to an XML file and to then import the data in the XML file to the target DB2 Content Manager.

The Metadata Migration Tool provides the following benefits:

  • Improves the efficiency of migrating/redeploying the CM System.
  • Reduces the risk of making mistakes in migrating/redeploying the CM system.
  • Provides an effective way of backing up the CM system definitions.
  • Supports structured data storage format.

The Metadata Migration Tool for DB2 Content Manager is designed for Windows operating system but can also run on other systems with a JavaTM Virtual Machine. The tool supports the following DB2 Content Manager Products:

  • DB2 Content Manager for Multiplatform, Version 8.x
  • DB2 Content Manager Express Edition

The delivered package contains the binary code and the documents. A Windows script file (runtool.bat) is also provided with the binary code; this .bat file can start up the tool directly in the Windows system. Users can use their own script files to run this tool under other operating systems.

How does it work?

This tool reads the data structure definitions from the CM system and creates new data structure definitions in the CM system by using the CM APIs. It uses a Document Object Model (DOM) to parse these data definitions into a well-formed XML format. A predefined Schema file is used to determine whether the XML file contains syntax errors during an importation process.

All the data structure definitions that can be accessed by the CM APIs can be exported to the XML file by the tool. The data structures that the tool can export include 17 categories under four main parts: Authentication, Authorization, Data Model, and Document Routing. These data definitions are the same in different DB2 Content Manager systems and can be conveniently migrated to another system using the Metadata Migration Tool for DB2 Content Manager.
