What is IBM GUI-Based Administration Tool for IBM Network Authentication Service?
IBM® Network Authentication Service, a Kerberos service, is extensively used by IBM products such as AIX®, AIX NFSv4, DB2® UDB, IBM Tivoli® Directory Server, IBM Tivoli Access Manager, etc., to exercise Kerberos-based authentication and related services. One of the challenges for administrators deploying and maintaining Network Authentication Service-based solutions is managing principals and security policies. IBM Network Authentication Service 1.4 provides administrators with a command line interface (called "kadmin") for managing principals and policies; this command line interface is available only on UNIX® platforms.
The Graphical User Interface (GUI)-Based Administration Tool for IBM Network Authentication Service eases the task of administrators by allowing them to manage principals and policies on Network Authentication Service-based solutions by using an interactive GUI. The GUI helps administrators get a consolidated view of IBM Network Authentication Service principals and policies. No longer will the administrators be required to know the IBM Network Authentication Service commands for principal and policy management. In addition, the tool is available on AIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows. IBM Network Authentication Service administrators can now remotely carry on administrative tasks from any of the supported platforms.
This technology runs on AIX®, Linux® (32-bit), Solaris, and Windows® (32-bit).
How does it work? The GUI module was developed in Java™ using Eclipse and its SWT (Standard Widget Toolkit) component. The use of SWT has the advantage of giving the GUI the look and feel of the operating system on which it is running. The actual administration task is executed by a C-based program (in the form of a library), which makes use of the IBM Network Authentication Service-exported APIs. The Java-based GUI communicates with the C program using JNI (Java Native Interface) technology.
