1. What are typical uses of Nested Archive Toolkit for Java?

The toolkit has been used for the following:
  • building a complete list of the contents of WebSphere Installation images, including fully expanded lists of JAR files and of J2EE Enterprise Application files (EAR files), as well as signature information for each file and archive entity
  • performing direct (scan and copy) updates of nested archive contents
  • expanding EAR files in a single operation
  • collapsing EAR files in a single operation.

2. How is the toolkit implemented?

Nested Archive Toolkit for Java is primarily a collection of Java classes with a few scripts and XML metadata for the Eclipse plug-ins.

3. Since the toolkit is implemented Java, can I use it on multiple platforms (Linux, AIX, Windows)?

The toolkit has been designed for multiple platforms, but testing has progressed only to Windows.

4. I can unpack or pack archives with other tools (WinZip, PKZip); why should I use Nested Archive Toolkit for Java?

For the following reasons:
  • Nested Archive Toolkit for Java enables the packing or unpacking of nested archives in a single operation.
  • This toolkit preserves information when copying and updating. ZIP and Java archives contain information in addition to the basic packed file data. Performing an update by unpacking the content, making the modification, and then repacking destroys the additional information.

5. Why not allow direct updates to the archives?

Direct updates are possible in a single layered archive (with no nested archives), but is not possible in nested archives, because nested archives are often recompressed. The presence of recompression makes the nested update technically very difficult.
