What is Network and Identity Configurator for Linux?

Network and Identity Configurator for Linux® (NICL) is a tool that enables easy changing of the system name and network address of Linux systems and IBM middleware. It employs a BASH script that can save multiple man-months in system configuration time. This tool was developed within IBM for administrating an internal block of Linux systems. For example, a typical system involves managing a multi-server VMware ESX environment, and that involves the creation of many possible different virtual servers and Linux configurations.

Although there are canned systems prepared with different settings that can be activated on the fly, oftentimes it is still necessary to change system network addresses and names quickly and reliably. Using this script enables avoidance of re-installations of any middleware or operating system components.

How does it work?

Using the NICL script allows a system administrator to activate a new system in under 30 minutes. Without it, one might have to resort to a full installation of an image from scratch that, including the operating system and middleware, could easily take several days (or weeks).

This tool has been tested on the following Linux systems: SuSE SLES 8.1; RedHat 8, 9, and FC1; and VMware ESX servers.

Further information is available in a discussion of this tool as part of an IBM developerWorks series.
