Java tool: JDK 1.3.1 or above
Software: DB2 Version 7 or above

Installation instructions for Policy-Based Data Management Tool

  1. Make sure that there exists on the system a user who has administration rights for creating the database.
  2. Double-click on setup.exe.
  3. Click on Next and then select the language.
  4. Click on Next and then select I accept the terms in the license agreement.
  5. Choose the location for installing the tool, and then click on Next.
  6. In the database configuration screen, enter the names of the policy database, archive database, user name, and password, and then click on the Next button. The Policy database and Archive database are created by the set-up program on behalf of this user. The set-up program also creates a Sample database (INVENTRY) for demonstration.
  7. Click on the finish button. The set-up program will start copying the files. It will create the Policy database, Archive database and Sample database on the system. You can access the Policy Maker, Domain Expert, Start Servers, and Stop Servers programs from the links added in the Programs menu.
  8. Some configuration parameters to be set and used:
    • If user name provided during installation for the creation of Policy database, Archive database, and Sample database (INVENTRY) is not "db2admin", then, in the inventry.xml file, replace the "DB2ADMIN" with the user name (in upper case) provided during installation. The file inventry.xml is presented in the installation directory.
    • Because the tool uses SMPT server for notification policies, after the installation you need to update the config.xml, which is located in installation directory with new SMTP server entry. Set the value of SMTP_NAME as SMTP server name and SMTP_IP as IP address of SMTP mtp server. You can also enter the daily time at which the policies related to "database size" are executed.
    • Default user name for Inventry database in the PolicyMaker application is "root". The password for this user (root) is "root".
    • The user can define his own "context" such as "US holiday" by making an entry in the table PDDA.Context. The entry includes the context name and its start and end temporal descriptions. The format for temporal description is
      • min delim hour delim date delim month delim day delim year delim -1 delim -1 delim -1
where delim is the delimeter=\u00C6. For example, a start context corresponding to Friday midnight will be
        59 delim 23 delim -1 delim -1 delim fri delim -1 delim -1 delim -1 delim -1
      where delimeter=\00C6s.
