Platform requirements
Operating systems: Windows® XP with SP2, Windows 2000 profession with SP4, Windows 2000 server with SP4; IBM® AIX® 5.3 in latest subscription and support level; Linux® Fedora Core 7 (x86).
Hardware:
- Intel® processor-based desktop or ThinkPad: Intel Pentium® 4 2.0 GHz or Pentium M 1.5 GHz CPU; 512 MB memory
- IBM Power PC® processor-based workstation or server: IBM Power PC 4, Power 4+, PowerPC 5, or PowerPC 5+ processor; 512 MB memory
- The default JVM (Java™ Virtual Machine) heap memory size for running VPA is 512 MB. (In order to change the default memory size, edit the launcher script vpa.ini and change the parameter -vmargs -Xmx512m to a bigger number.
- 200 MB disk space (for VPA installation); additional disk space required for storing cached database files.
Software:
- IBM JRE 5.0 (with IBM J9)
- IBM DB2 UDB 8.1 or 8.2 (if you want to use DB2 as the back-end database engine)
Installation instructions
Windows
The installation instructions for Windows assume that VPA will be installed in the c:\vpa directory; however, you can install VPA in any directory you want. Please substitute your installation directory for c:\vpa in the commands that follow.
- Make a "vpa" directory, as follows: mkdir c:\vpa
- Download the Windows version of VPA to the directory.
- Change to the directory and decompress, as follows:
cd /d c:\vpa
unzip vpa-rcp-6.1.0-Win32.zip
vpa.exe

Linux and AIX
These installation instructions assume that VPA will be installed in the /opt/vpa directory; however, you can install VPA in any directory you want. Please substitute your installation directory for /opt/vpa in the commands that follow.
- Make a VPA directory, as follows: mkdir /opt/vpa
- Download the Linux or AIX version of VPA to the directory.
- Change to the directory, as follows: cd /opt/vpa
- Decompress the file, as follows:
- On AIX: tar -zxvf vpa-rcp-6.1.0-aix-ppc.tgz
- On Linux: tar -zxvf vpa-rcp-6.1.0-linux-x86.tgz
- In order to run VPA, please enter the following:
cd /opt/vpa/vpa-rcp
./vpa
