Platform requirements for Web Adaptation Technology

Operating systems: Windows® 98, ME, 2000, or XP

Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer® Web browser, Version 5.5 or above

Memory: 125 MB (256 MB recommended for Windows XP)

Computer speed: 500 MHz processor

Disk space: 10 MB free hard drive space

Other: An active Internet connection

Screen resolution: The software is optimized for a screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. It will also work well at higher resolutions (such as 1024 x 768 pixels). Lower resolutions (such as 640 x 480 pixels) are not supported, however, and some features of the software may not work properly at these lower resolutions.

Software: IBM ViaVoice® Text-To-Speech software (for using the Speak Text feature). Note: ViaVoice may already be installed on your machine. ViaVoice is available in several different languages and can read aloud pages in the following different languages, if installed: English (U.S. and U.K.), Spanish (Castilian and Mexican), French (including French Canadian), Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, and German.

Additional requirements for two specific features (optional, depending on whether or not you wish to use these features):

  • In order to use the Speak Text feature, which enables you to hear the page read aloud:
    • Ability to hear sounds on your computer through either external or built-in speakers or headphones. Laptop computers will usually have the speakers built-in. For desktop computers, you usually must attach either speakers or headphones.
    • An additional 284 MB free on the hard drive.
  • In order to use the Mouse Keys function, which enables you to use the keyboard instead of a mouse: A keyboard that has a separate "key pad" on the right side of the keyboard.
